Which Volunteer Role Is Right for You?
Why Volunteer?
Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time; it’s about gaining something too. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, boost your confidence, learn new skills or simply make a difference in someone’s life, volunteering can offer all of that and more. It’s even proven to improve wellbeing and mental health with 77% of volunteers reporting that volunteering improved their wellbeing (NCVO, Time Well Spent Survey)
Finding the Right Fit
We believe that volunteering should always feel positive, rewarding, and manageable. That’s why we take time to get to know you: your interests, your availability, and what you’re hoping to get from the experience. During your welcome call, we’ll talk through all of this and help guide you to a role that suits your lifestyle.
Not sure where to start? Here are a few ways you can get involved:
Helping Others One-to-One
If you enjoy building personal connections, our home-based support roles are flexible and meaningful:
Befriender: Provide regular companionship for someone who is visually impaired and may be feeling isolated
Reader or Shopper: Help with reading correspondence or accompany someone on a shopping trip
These roles work around your availability and make a direct difference to someone’s independence and wellbeing.
Community and Connection
Looking to be part of something social? You can support our group activities in ways that create real joy:
Friendship Driver: Give someone a lift to their local group and stay for a chat if you’d like
Social & Activity Group Volunteer: Help run our local social groups, from serving tea to supporting games and conversation
Volunteer Committee Member: Help plan, organise, and run group activities in your area
These are great roles if you enjoy people, routine, and making others feel welcome.
Health and Wellbeing Roles
Combine giving back with keeping active:
Tandem Pilot (Milton Keynes only): Ride tandem with a visually impaired cyclist
Walking Guide (Aylesbury & Milton Keynes): Join local walks and guide someone safely on foot
Bowls Club Helper (Aylesbury only): Support members to enjoy accessible bowling sessions
These roles are perfect for weekend availability or if you're passionate about movement and outdoors.
Use or Grow Your Skills
Put your know-how to good use or learn something new while giving back:
Digital Technology Volunteer: Help someone build confidence using apps, emails, or accessible devices
Admin or Social Media Support: Lend a hand with simple office tasks or content creation
Fundraising Volunteer: Collect donations, help at events, or raise awareness in your local community
These roles are often ad hoc or project-based — ideal if you prefer something less regular or want to volunteer from home.
Worried About Picking the Wrong Role?
There’s no pressure to get it right first time. We offer a flexible trial period and are always happy to help you adjust your role or try something different. We’re here to make your volunteering experience work for you, not the other way around.
